The reigning king of football and all-time great Lionel Messi had once paid a sweet homage to tennis legend Roger Federer, labeling him a "genius."

Roger Federer, a record holder of 20 Grand Slam titles and widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, retired from the sport in 2022. Messi was among the many athletes who expressed their admiration and best wishes for Federer after the tennis icon announced his retirement.

Messi wrote a candid post on Instagram that spoke volumes about how high in regard he held the 'King of Grass'.

"A genius, unique in the history of tennis and an example for any athlete. All the best in your new stage, we will miss seeing you on the court making us enjoy," wrote Leo Messi on Instagram.

Messi expressed his admiration for Federer's enduring excellence on the tennis court. He labeled Roger Federer a 'genius,' and hailed the Swiss maestro an 'example' for any athlete. He wished the tennis icon good luck for the next phase in his life and also thanked him for delivering the wonderful years on the court.

Meanwhile, Roger Federer has always been a Messi fan. The Swiss legend reciprocated Messi's gesture by penning a very emotional letter for the Argentine 'magician' when Messi was voted Times' greatest athlete of all-time, following his World Cup winning campaign with Argentina.

Beyond their individual accomplishments, Messi and Federer are both known for their sportsmanship, humility, and dedication. They both have inspired millions and serve as role models for aspiring athletes around the globe.
